Boston Harbor Cleanup is completed.

The project is considered complete when the old Deer Island Sewage Treatment Plant is shut down, the new Massachusetts Water Resources plant goes on line. Groundbreaking on the $3.8 billion project took place on August 10, 1988. The new system processes raw sewage from over 2 million people in 43 communities, as well as 5,500 businesses and industrial sites, includes 5,400 miles of local sewers, 228 miles of MWRA interceptor sewers, and four large tunnels, and a 9.5-mile outfall pipe.
